NEVA - SWISS pharmaceutical giant Novartis has received approval from the Japanese authorities for four drugs, including a medication for the treatment of leukaemia, the group said on Wednesday.

 
Nasty worm affects computers

SAN FRANCISCO - A NASTY worm has wriggled into millions of computers and continues to spread, leaving security experts on Tuesday wondering whether the attack is a harbinger of evil deeds to come.

US software protection firm F-Secure says a computer worm known as 'Conficker' or 'Downadup' had infected more than nine million computers by Tuesday and was spreading at a rate of one million machines daily.

Partying cuts dementia risk

LONDON - KEEPING a full social calendar may help protect you from dementia, researchers said on Monday.

Socially active people who were not easily stressed had a 50 per cent lower risk of developing dementia compared with men and women who were isolated and prone to distress, they reported in the journal Neurology.

Crisis may be bad for health

GENEVA - THE World Health Organisation warned on Monday the global financial crisis may spark a rise in mental illness and health problems as people turn to alcohol, tobacco and drugs to get through the downturn.

'This has happened in the past,' said the UN agency's Director-General Margaret Chan at the launch of a conference on the financial crisis' effects on health.
