TOKYO - SONY said it would finally launch its 'Home' 3D social community for the PlayStation 3 worldwide on Thursday, enabling users to roam through a virtual universe filled with life-like characters.

The company hopes the service will boost interest in the PS3 in the face of fierce competition from Nintendo's Wii, which has proved a hit even with people who would not usually play video games.

 
Diabetes drugs double risk

LONDON - LONG-TERM use of GlaxoSmithKline's Avandia and Takeda's Actos doubles the risk of bone fractures in women with type 2 diabetes, according to a study released on Wednesday.

Scientists already knew the two thiazolidinedione (TZD) drugs for diabetes were associated with fractures, but the magnitude of the risk had not been evaluated.

Boston vets fix cat's face

BOSTON - ME-OUCH! Veterinarians performed an unusual surgery to reattach the face of a cat they believe was injured by a car's fan belt, probably because she tried to stay warm under the hood.

Edgar, a 4-year-old long-haired feline, went missing from her home in Winthrop for three days last week. When she finally came home, her owner found her in her litter box - with part of her face dangling from her head.

Intel challenges $27m fine

SEOUL - US SEMICONDUCTOR giant Intel Corporation said on Wednesday it has launched a court challenge against a US$18 million (S$27 million) fine imposed by South Korea's anti-trust watchdog for unfair trading.

Intel said it has filed a formal complaint with the Seoul High Court to overturn the ruling by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC).
