CHICAGO - US RESEARCHER have engineered a synthetic version of the common e. coli bacteria that could help build a better biofuel, according to a study published on Monday.

By altering the basic genetic structure of the bacteria, researchers were able to stimulate it to produce long-chain alcohols that are denser in energy than those found in nature.

 
'No fair' from dogs too

WASHINGTON - NO FAIR! What parent has not heard that from a child who thinks another youngster got more of something? Well, it turns out dogs can react the same way.

Ask them to do a trick and they'll give it a try. For a reward, sausage say, they will happily keep at it.

CHICAGO - HERE'S a health tip in a nutshell: Eating a handful of nuts a day for a year - along with a Mediterranean diet rich in fruit, vegetables and fish - may help undo a collection of risk factors for heart disease.

Spanish researchers found that adding nuts worked better than boosting the olive oil in a typical Mediterranean diet.

1/2 dose flu shot good too

WASHINGTON - A HALF dose of flu vaccine may work just as well as the full dose for healthy adults under 50 - a finding that could help stretch supplies in the event of a future vaccine shortage, researchers said on Monday.

The study involved about 1,100 US adults, about half of whom were given a half dose of influenza vaccine in November and December 2004 and the rest were given a full dose.
