PARIS - SCIENTISTS said on Wednesday they had reconstructed around half of the genome of the woolly mammoth, a species that became extinct at the end of the last Ice Age some 11,000 years ago.

The sequence comes from DNA in hair snipped from two woolly mammoths whose bodies have been preserved in Siberian permafrost for tens of thousands of years, they reported in the British-based weekly journal Nature.

'iPhone' mistaken for 'sex'

LONDON - A NEW voice-recognition search tool for the iPhone has problems understanding British accents, leading to some bizarre answers to spoken queries, a newspaper report and users said on Wednesday.

The free application, which allows iPhone owners to use the Google search engine with their voice, mistook the word 'iPhone' variously for 'sex,' 'Einstein' and 'kitchen sink,' said the Daily Telegraph.

New rating for phone chargers

HELSINKI - THE world's top five mobile phone makers launched on Wednesday a common energy rating system for chargers, making it easier for consumers to compare and choose the ones consuming the least energy, Nokia said.

The new rating system is a mobile phone industry response to heavy criticism from environmentalists. The industry has become the world's top consumer electronics business by volume.

Nvidia's new supercomputers

SAN FRANCISCO - US TECHNOLOGY firm Nvidia rolled out high-performance 'personal supercomputers' on Tuesday that let desktop workstations handle mind-boggling tasks once far beyond their capabilities.

Computers built with innovative Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) are capable of handling calculations typically relegated to expensive supercomputing 'clusters' - a technology breakthrough the company says could soon bring lightning speeds to the next generation of computers aimed at the consumer market.
