LONDON - DAVID Shepherd, a highly popular former English test cricket umpire who had the superstitious habit of standing on one leg when a team reached certain scores, has died of cancer, the English and Wales Cricket Board said on Wednesday. He was 68.

 
Whan is LPGA commissioner

MIAMI - MICHAEL Whan was appointed commissioner of the LPGA Tour on Wednesday.

'We established very strict criteria for the position of commissioner and Mike impressed us not only with his background and intellect but also his passion for golf,' the LPGA said in a statement.

Transfer ban on Pompey

LONDON - ENGLAND'S Premier League announced on Wednesday they had placed a transfer embargo on basement club Portsmouth.

Renault gets new sponsor

LONDON - FORMER champions Renault have secured their first new sponsor since they were handed a suspended permanent ban last month for their involvement in a race-fixing scandal.

Dutch watch brand TW Steel said in a statement they had agreed a three year deal to be Renault's official timing partner. No financial details were given.
