MADRID - VALENCIA striker David Villa, one of the stars of Spain's victorious Euro 2008 squad, has signed for Real Madrid for close to E$40 million (S$81 million), a Spanish newspaper said on Saturday.

Marca, citing sources at Real Madrid and Valencia, said both clubs were hammering out the fine details of the deal before officially announcing the transfer.

 
Phelps breezes to victory

The superstar from the Beijing Olympics touched first in 1 minute, 54.31 seconds in Friday's final, beating the field by 5.67 seconds.

Man Utd woos Wigan winger

LONDON - MANCHESTER United have tabled offers for Wigan Athletic's Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia, the Premier League club's chairman Dave Whelan has said.

'They (United) have been in touch with us and we will be starting negotiations very shortly, I would imagine,' Whelan told Sky Sports News when asked about Valencia.

Nick Faldo knighted

LONDON - GOLFER Nick Faldo can add another title to his six majors - 'Sir'. Faldo will be given a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II on Saturday for his services to golf, the only athlete to be given one of Britain's highest honours on the monarch's birthday list this year.

'I was delighted to hear the news that I will be receiving a knighthood and am more than a little bit humbled to have been afforded this great honour,' Faldo said in a statement.
