PARIS - SVETLANA Kuznetsova defeated Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-2 in an all-Russian final of the French Open on Saturday to take away her second Grand Slam title.

It was a comprehensive win for the 23-year-old seventh seed who lost in the final here in 2006 to Justine Henin two years after she stunned the world of tennis by winning the US Open as a 19-year-old.

 
Wenger to bolster defence

BEIJING - ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger says he will focus on bolstering his team's defence in the current offseason, believing that is the key to challenging for the English Premier League and Champions League titles in the next campaign.

In an interview with The Associated Press while visiting Beijing, Wenger said on Saturday that Arsenal had scored as many goals as first place finishers Manchester United, but conceded more than any of the other top four teams.

Vettel takes pole

ISTANBUL - GERMAN tyro driver Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull outpaced his rivals in the closing seconds of a dramatic qualifying session on Saturday to claim pole position for the Turkish Grand Prix.

The 21-year-old German delivered his second pole of the season and the third of his career to pinch the prime starting position from nearest challenger and world championship leader Briton Jenson Button.

Denilson sits out match

HAI PHONG (Vietnam) - VIETNAMESE football fans flocked to witness the debut of former Brazil international Denilson on Saturday - but were left fuming as he sat in the stands, saying he needed more practice time.

More than an hour before the match began, Lach Tray stadium was packed with with more than 30,000 people, eager to see the star, once the world's most expensive footballer, play his first game for Hai Phong Cement Football Club.
