LONDON - NEWCASTLE owner Mike Ashley apologised to the club's fans on Tuesday after United's relegation from the Premier League and said talks with interim manager Alan Shearer were ongoing.

'Seeing Newcastle United relegated from the Premier League has been a catastrophe for us all,' Mr Ashley said in a statement on the club's website (www.nufc.co.uk).

Ron not worried about Messi

ROME - WHILE Manchester United and Barcelona play for the Champions League trophy, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi may well be squaring off for the right to call himself the world's best player.

Ronaldo, however, doesn't seem too concerned about that.

Red Devils to wear all-white

ROME - MANCHESTER United will play in an all-white strip when they face Barcelona in the Champions League final on Wednesday, just as they did when they beat them in the 1991 European Cup Winners' Cup final.

United are designated as the 'away' team at the Stadio Olimpico which meant Barcelona had first choice of strip and opted to play in their traditional blue and red kit.

Champions League fever

ROME - CLAD in the colours of their teams, Manchester United and Barcelona fans began arriving in the Italian capital on Tuesday ahead of the Champions League final.

About 67,000 fans are expected to attend the final, including 30,000 from England and 20,000 from Spain. The bulk of them will arrive on Wednesday, the day of the final at Rome's Olympic Stadium.
