NEWCASTLE - NEWCASTLE United grabbed a Premier League lifeline on Monday when late goals by substitutes Obafemi Martins and Peter Lovenkrands secured a 3-1 home win over fellow relegation strugglers Middlesbrough.

The victory in a tense Northeast clash, Newcastle's first win at home in 2009, edged them out of the relegation zone on 34 points, above Hull City on goal difference.

 
Man Utd & Barca lose appeals

GENEVA - UEFA'S disciplinary body confirmed on Monday that Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher will miss the Champion's League final on May 27 along with Barcelona defenders Eric Abidal and Daniel Alves.

European football's governing body said in a statement that the body rejected protests by both clubs against the suspensions.

Sharapova to return next week

NEW YORK - MARIA Sharapova plans to be back on tour next week.

Sidelined by shoulder surgery, Sharapova wrote on her Web site on Monday that she will play her first competitive singles match in nearly 10 months at the May 18-23 clay-court tournament in Warsaw, Poland.

Red Bull teams' pull-out threat

BARCELONA - BOTH teams owned by Red Bull on Monday joined Toyota in threatening to pull out of Formula One if the sport's ruling body does not make changes to its controversial budget-cap rules for next year.
