DUBAI - WORLD number three Novak Djokovic reached his first final of the season when he beat third-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon 3-6 7-5 7-5 at the Dubai Championships on Friday.

The Serb will face fourth seed David Ferrer after the Spaniard overwhelmed Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-2 6-2.

 
$25k fine for throwing towel

ORLANDO (Florida) - DETROIT Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Friday for his actions after his ejection in the 90-87 loss to New Orleans on Wednesday.

Wallace was ejected after receiving two technicals in the fourth quarter. His first technical was for arguing a call and the second came when he tossed a towel into the stands. Before leaving, Wallace then tossed a towel toward the floor.

Fergie's kids can win

MANCHESTER (England) - SIR Alex Ferguson has backed Manchester United's youngsters to repay his faith by lifting the League Cup on Sunday.

The European champions face Tottenham at Wembley bidding to win the League Cup for only the third time in the club's history and Ferguson has vowed to field inexperienced starlets Danny Welbeck, Darron Gibson and Jonny Evans against Harry Redknapp's team.

Els advances to quarter-finals

TUCSON (Arizona) - SOUTH Africa's Ernie Els advanced to the quarter-finals of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship Friday at the expense of injured Englishman Luke Donald.

Els was 1-up on Donald through 17 holes when the Englishman conceded the match because of a problem with hs surgically repaired left wrist.
