DENVER - LANCE Armstrong scrapped his much-publicized plan to set up an independent drug-testing programme on Wednesday because of high costs and nearly impossible logistics.

When Armstrong announced his comeback last year, the seven-time Tour de France winner said he wanted to prove he was clean, and was teaming with anti-doping expert Don Catlin, who would test him and post the results online.

 
Serena in top form for Paris

PARIS - SERENA Williams began her third stint as world number one with a straightforward 6-1, 6-4 victory over Czech left-hander Iveta Benesova in the first round of the WTA Paris Open on Wednesday.

Hiddink temporary manager

LONDON - CHELSEA says Guus Hiddink has taken temporary charge of the Premier League club until the end of the season.

Chelsea issued a statement Wednesday saying the Dutchman will meet his new players later this week, ahead of Saturday's FA Cup match at Watford.

Real to borrow $136m

MADRID - REAL Madrid will borrow 70 million euros (S$136 million) from Spain's largest bank Santander to help finance the purchase of Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, Spanish radio said on Wednesday.
