TOKYO - JAPAN will submit bids to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022.

'We have decided to stand for bidding to host the World Cup in 2018 and or 2022,' Japan Football Association president Motoaki Inukai said in a statement released Thursday.

 
Fog hits Dubai Desert Classic

DUBAI - MORNING fog again played havoc with the Dubai Desert Classic on Friday preventing any early play on the second day.

The tournament was already badly behind schedule after two hours and 40 minutes were lost at the start of Thursday's opening round.

Williams sisters win doubles

MELBOURNE - SERENA and Venus Williams won their eighth Grand Slam women's doubles title Friday with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and Japan's Ai Sugiyama.

The Williams sisters, seeded 10th, looked unflustered as they served out the first set in just 38 minutes under a closed roof on centre court.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu creator dies

SAO PAULO - HELIO Gracie, one of the main creators of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that gained worldwide popularity, has died.

He was 95.

Gracie died Thursday morning and was buried in the afternoon near his home in the mountain resort town of Petropolis near Rio de Janeiro, according to a short statement posted on the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy website.
