KOCHI (India) - THE eight competitors in the Volvo Race around the world left the southwestern Indian port of Kochi on Saturday headed for Singapore for a short but gruelling third stage taking the race through to Christmas.

Leaders Ericsson 4, skippered by Brazilian Torben Grael, will be bidding to extend their advantage after setting out from Willingdon Island, the modern port area which serves Kochi.

 
'Tapping-up' is common

LONDON - TOTTENHAM manager Harry Redknapp said the growing influence of players means that the breaking of Premier League rules by 'tapping-up' players and even managers now happens regularly.

Negotiating with players from other clubs is against Premier League rules in England, but the practice is one that is likely to be on the increase as the January transfer window approaches.

Teams' attitude needs work

SOUTHEAST Asian soccer chiefs must look at introducing stiffer penalties and stricter regulations to prevent petulance, anger and out-of-control behaviour from tarnishing the region's soccer championships, according to a senior official.

Asean Football Federation Executive Secretary Yap Nyim Keong said something must be done to stamp out 'unsavoury incidents' during the hotly-contested regional event.

Hamilton receives trophy

MONACO - LEWIS Hamilton received his trophy as Formula One's youngest champion on Friday and the 23-year-old Briton said he had fulfilled a childhood dream.

'This year has been a very special one in my life, the fulfilment of a dream I've had since childhood and an ambition that has taken my family and me on an amazing journey,' Hamilton said at the International Automobile Federation gala awards dinner.
