ZURICH - WORLD football's ruling body FIFA on Friday revealed the remaining contenders for the 2008 World Player and FIFA Women's World Player awards, to be handed out here on Jan 12, 2009.

The male nominees are Kaka (Brazil), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Fernando Torres (Spain), and Xavi (Spain).

 
Novel therapy for Duric

THIS could be his one and only chance to win silverware with the Singapore Lions, who are through to the semi-finals of the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup.

But that dream appeared to have shattered for Aleksandar Duric last week when he fractured his leg. He was kicked by an opponent in the game against Cambodia, which Singapore won 5-0.

Poland may host Euro alone

WARSAW - UEFA president Michel Platini has hinted that Poland may have to host the 2012 European Championship on its own if construction of co-host Ukraine's national stadium is delayed.

Platini, who said on Wednesday that he had full confidence that preparations in Poland and neighboring Ukraine were on track, also downplayed earlier suggestions from Polish football officials that Germany could step in as host in case of delays.

Rooney ruling on Monday

MANCHESTER - MANCHESTER United are set to find out on Monday whether they will be deprived of the services of Wayne Rooney for a Champions League second round tie which could pit them against either Real Madrid or Inter Milan.

Rooney was fortunate to escape a red card over an incident Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Aalborg in which he apeared to trample on the chest of midfielder Kasper Risgard.
