INDIA'S Jeev Milkha Singh thanked the 'golfing gods' after clinching the Singapore Open on Sunday by a shot from Ireland's Padraig Harrington and South Africa's Ernie Els in a dramatic finish.

Harrington needed to sink a five foot putt at the last to force a play-off but pushed his shot right, and then Els, in the group behind, had to do the same but his 15 footer curled round the lip of the hole.

 
Ronaldo scores 100th goal

MANCHESTER - WITH a trademark free kick, Cristiano Ronaldo etched his name deeper into Manchester United folklore by becoming the club's latest goalscoring centurion on Saturday.

And to round off the 5-0 rout of Stoke, he registered his 101st goal with another dead ball.

Pistons deal Lakers' 1st defeat

LOS ANGELES - RASHEED Wallace and recently acquired Allen Iverson scored 25 points apiece Friday as Detroit handed the Los Angeles Lakers their first defeat of the National Basketball Association season.

All five of Detroit's starters scored in double figures as the Pistons downed the Lakers 106-95.

Federer hoping for new start

SHANGHAI - ROGER Federer said he was glad to bring down the curtain on a difficult season and hoped to bounce back for a tilt at the Grand Slam record next year.

The defending champion battled a back injury as he went down in three sets to Britain's Andy Murray, ending his campaign for a fifth Masters Cup title at the group stage.
