THE annual shopping season is back with the return of the two-month-long Great Singapore Sale (GSS), which started on May 29.

With more than 1,000 retailers across the island dangling hefty discounts, lucky draws and freebies this year, bargain hunters are hitting the streets with full ferocity.

But the incentives seem to have also lured displays of ugly behaviour among shoppers.

Grads exploit 'loophole'

TO SOME, all's fair in love and getting cheap buys - even if you are a graduate still hanging on to your matric card.

Take 27-year-old Timothy (not his real name), for instance.

Now working in the media industry, he graduated more than two years ago but still pays the discounted student price for his buffet meal at the Sakae Sushi chain.

S'poreans in mood to spend

SINGAPORE may be in recession mode but many Singaporeans sure are not.

Every weekend, shopping malls are packed, as are property and car showrooms. The stock market has been busy and discounts offered in the ongoing Great Singapore Sale are attracting hordes of shoppers who merrily tote bags bursting with purchases.

S'pore confirms 15th flu case

SINGAPORE'S 15th Influenza A (H1N1) case, a 39-year-old Indonesian woman, is also the first local case.

She had not been abroad recently. Her niece, who was the 11th confirmed H1N1 case here, was infected after returning from New York on June 1.
