NANYANG Technological University professor Chan Kap Luk barely glanced at the undergraduate who had come into his room. He was busy at his computer preparing slides for a presentation at noon that day.

The student, Mr David Hartanto Widjaja said he wanted to discuss his final year project, due for submission at the end of March. He wanted to give the lecturer a thumbdrive containing a computer program he had worked on.

 
Financial services top in Q1

SINGAPORE'S economy contracted sharply in the first quarter across almost all sectors with two notable exceptions: financial services and construction.

The building trade posted growth of 9.6 per cent in the first quarter, making it a standout performer, but it was still below the 10.3 per cent expansion in the fourth quarter of last year.

S'pore consumers at low point
CONSUMER confidence in the past six months has hit an all-time low here, according to a new survey.

Singapore dropped from 92 points on the Nielsen Global Consumer Confidence Index late last year to 80. This is the third consecutive decline in the twice-yearly index since the all-time high in late 2007.

Exploring fares for disabled

BUS operator SBS Transit is looking into offering concession fares to commuters with physical disabilities.

It is considering doing this on its buses first, and the same for trains later.

The company, part of transport giant ComfortDelGro Corp, would only say it is 'exploring the possibility' when queried by The Straits Times yesterday.
