AT LEAST 45,000 new jobs will be up for grabs in the next two years, with many of them suitable for professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs).

In giving the update on Monday, Acting Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong also listed where they are to be found.

 
No electoral boundaries panel

THE Prime Minister has not appointed the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee, nor has he decided when to do so.

Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng on Monday gave this categorical answer to Non-Constituency MP Sylvia Lim, who wanted to know if the committee - seen as a precursor to a general election - had been appointed.

More powers to police

HOME Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng on Monday tabled a Bill in Parliament that will give the police greater powers to maintain public order, for example during major events like the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation summit which Singapore will host in November.

Protests and terrorist action are some of the threats that bedevil such mega events, which Singapore is increasingly hosting more of.

Wild hornbill seeks Mr Right

WANTED: A mate for Singapore's only wild rhinoceros hornbill living in the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.

The female already has possible suitors from among captive males, but they may belong to any of three sub-species of this endangered bird and not be an exact genetic match.
