EVERY day firemen put out at least six fires burning in rubbish chutes, bins and other spots on residential estates. In the last year numbers have increased from 1,969 in 2007 to 2,166 - the highest figures since 1999.

 
Hawkers didn't raise prices

NEARLY 190 hawker stalls have not increased their prices over the past six months, despite escalating costs and dropping sales, a survey released on Wednesday showed.

Mosques using English more

ALTHOUGH Malay is still the dominant language of instruction in Singapore's mosques, English is increasingly being used in Friday prayer sermons and religious classes at some mosques.

Punished for assault

RILED by a soldier's poor work attitude, three of his colleagues beat him up one evening, with one of them hitting him with a helmet, umbrella and broomstick until the 19-year-old lay on the floor, semi-conscious and vomiting.
