DAILY, an average of about 35 people lost their jobs during July to September this year, a big jump from the 21 a day in the preceding three months. The increase, shown in the latest official figures, signals the growing depth of the economic crisis.

In all, 3,178 people were either laid off or had their contracts ended prematurely in the third-quarter, said the Manpower Ministry on Monday when it released the numbers.

 
Sec school posting by SMS

NEARLY all parents of Primary 6 pupils will receive SMSes at 9am on Thursday telling them which secondary schools their children have been posted to.

SMSes were introduced as a new way for parents to receive secondary school posting results this year.

Jamuna back in hospital

NEPALESE twin Jamuna, who was scheduled to leave Singapore on Monday, is back in hospital, after two unexpected developments in the last eight days.

It started last Monday, when she was warded at East Shore Hospital after a shunt, put in seven years ago to drain excess fluid from her brain, fractured.

SIA passenger numbers dip

PASSENGER numbers on Singapore Airlines declined 6.1 per cent in November compared with last year, its biggest fall in more than five years.

It is also the second drop in the past three months, with numbers down year-on-year in September. November's fall was he largest drop since a 7.6 per cent decline in August 2003.
