IT WAS a day of tears, tension and disappointment at DBS Bank on Thursday as the first of hundreds of employees were told that they had been laid off.

It is unclear how many staff lost their jobs yesterday but a DBS spokesperson said most of those earmarked to go will be told by Friday night. The start of the layoffs did bring a degree of relief to the 7,600 bank staff here who have been nervously waiting to see where and when the axe would fall.

 
Container traffic slows in Oct

THE number of containers handled by Singapore's ports grew at a slower pace last month - yet another sign of the rough seas hitting these shores.

Container throughput at PSA Singapore Terminals and Jurong Port grew 5 per cent in October from a year ago, down the 8.5 per cent seen in September, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) yesterday.

Appeal to proceed

THREE men sentenced to hang for the murder of a lorry driver tried to give up their right to appeal against their convictions on Thursday.

But the Court of Appeal denied the requests of two of the men, who had not directly assaulted the victim but had been found guilty of murder by common intention.

Special schools renamed

IN APRIL, officials from the Singapore Autism School sat down and discussed renaming the institution, whose doors had opened three years earlier.
