SINGAPORE - THE leaders of the United States and the 10-member Southeast Asian bloc agreed on Sunday that military-run Myanmar's 2010 elections must be 'free, fair, inclusive and transparent' to be credible.

 
Obama asks to free Suu Kyi

SINGAPORE - PRESIDENT Barack Obama on Sunday told Myanmar's junta to free pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi during an unusual face-to-face interaction with a top leader of the ruling military.

Mr Obama delivered the strong message during his summit with leaders of 10 Southeast Asian nations, which included Myanmar Prime Minister Gen. Thein Sein.

Thaksin opponents rally

BANGKOK - THOUSANDS of demonstrators from Thailand's royalist 'Yellow Shirt' movement protested in Bangkok on Sunday against a visit to Cambodia by their arch-foe, fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The group said it had called the rally to express outrage at the neighbouring country's appointment of Thaksin as an economic adviser and Phnom Penh's refusal to extradite him during his four-day trip there this week.

Catholic paper gets permit

KUALA LUMPUR - A MALAYSIAN Catholic newspaper will be allowed to continue publication after the government withdrew a controversial decision to cancel its publishing permit, the editor said Sunday.
