YANGON - TWO top US envoys began talks with Myanmar's ruling generals on Tuesday and were set to meet democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi as they made the highest level visit to the military-ruled nation in 14 years.

The trip by Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell and his deputy Scot Marciel is the latest move by President Barack Obama's administration to engage Myanmar's reclusive junta.

 
Mirinae kills 11 in Vietnam

HANOI - DISASTER officials say Tropical Storm Mirinae has killed 11 people, left two missing and forced families onto rooftops in central Vietnam.

Officials say floods killed 10 people in Phu Yen province and one in neighbouring Binh Dinh province after the storm struck on Monday.

Another charged over rumours

BANGKOK - THAI authorities charged a third person on Tuesday with spreading false rumours about the health of the country's revered king, after concerns about his condition sent markets plunging, police said.

Somjet Sitthiworakul was arrested at his home near the resort of Pattaya for allegedly damaging national security by posting false information on the Internet, a day after police said they had charged two other people.

Court hears phone tapes

JAKARTA - POTENTIALLY explosive wiretap recordings allegedly demonstrating a high-level conspiracy to muzzle Indonesia's anti-graft agency were played in court for the first time on Tuesday.
