JAKART - INDONESIA'S parliament passed a new environment bill on Tuesday giving the Environment Ministry the power to revoke polluters' business licences, which environmentalists said could lead to more effective enforcement.

Indonesia's rapid economic growth has been accompanied by widespread pollution of its waterways, soil and air, as well as the destruction of its forests and wildlife, prompting criticism from green groups and the World Bank.

 
Indonesia passes film law

JAKARTA - INDONESIA'S parliament on Tuesday passed a controversial film law that requires more than half of movies shown in cinemas to be locally-produced and imposes restrictions on their content.

YANGON- THE party of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi said on Tuesday it was hopeful that she would be unconditionally released after a court agreed to hear an appeal against her recent conviction.

Last ferry passenger found

MANILA - THE last missing passenger from a ferry that sank in southern Philippine waters with nearly 1,000 people on board has been found, disaster response officials said on Tuesday.

The survivor, a woman suffering serious injuries, was picked up by a passing fishing vessel shortly after the Superferry 9 sank on Sunday, the Office of Civil Defence in Manila said.
