MANILA - THE United Nations' food agency resumed aid distribution to hundreds of thousands of refugees in the southern Philippines on Monday after a series of deadly bombings last week forced it to suspend deliveries.

The military blamed Muslim rebels for the attacks in Cotabato city that killed six people and wounded dozens July 5, and in Iligan two days later when three soldiers and about 10 civilians were hurt.

 
Teen sucked into pool pump

BANGKOK - A BRITISH teenager died in Thailand after he was sucked into a swimming pool pump, police confirmed on Monday.

Nathan Clark Griffiths, 14, was swimming with his older brother Rhys at a water park in Pattaya, east of Bangkok, when the incident occurred on Friday.

East Timor rebels on trial

DILI (East Timor) - REBEL soldiers accused of trying to assassinate the president and prime minister of East Timor went on trial Monday.

The 28 men ambushed President Jose Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao in 'simultaneous attacks' last year, chief prosecutor Felismino Cardoso said in his opening remarks.

Strong quake hits Indonesia

JAKARTA - A STRONG 6.4-magnitude quake struck Indonesia's remote eastern Sumba island Monday, the geophysics agency said.
