Penang stays on Unesco list

KUALA LUMPUR - THE UN cultural agency will keep the capital of Malaysia's resort island of Penang on its list of World Heritage Sites after government officials agreed not to allow high-rise hotels.

'Opposition will survive'

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who faces trial this month on sodomy charges, said his Pakatan Rakyat alliance would survive even if he is convicted and jailed.

Anwar has rejected the allegations levelled by a 23-year-old former aide as a conspiracy to derail his plan to topple the government.

6 held for kidnapping woman

JOHOR BARU - SIX people, including a Vietnamese woman factory worker, have been arrested over the kidnapping of a 55-year-old wife of a businessman for RM$1 million (S$413,000) ransom.

Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the six, aged between 19 and 35, were picked up in a series of raids soon after the victim was released unharmed on June 26.
