JAKARTA - AT LEAST three people were killed after police from Indonesia's anti-terror unit stormed an isolated airstrip occupied by a group of unidentified gunmen in Papua province, state news agency Antara reported on Sunday.

 
2 killed in attack in Thai south

NARATHIWAT (Thailand) - TWO people were killed and 19 wounded in an attack by suspected insurgents in Thailand's restive south on Sunday, police said.

Stimulus for 2m jobs

BANGKOK - THAI Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday urged lawmakers later this month to approve a US$22 billion (S$32 billion) loan to fund an economic stimulus package, saying it would create up to two million jobs.

Parliament will vote on whether to go ahead with seeking the loan during an extraordinary session starting on June 15, before the issue moves to the Senate, or upper house for approval.

Militants free female hostage

ZAMBOANGA (Philippines) - ISLAMIC militants on Sunday freed a Filipina hostage after more than four months in captivity in the southern Philippines, police said.

Leah Patris, an employee of a local micro-finance company, was recovered early Sunday near Sumisip town in Basilan island, a provincial police chief said.
