SINGAPORE - A TOP MYANMAR general on Sunday rejected repeated calls for the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, insisting that her ongoing trial was in line with its laws.

Opposition wins

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA'S opposition won an easy victory on Sunday in a special election in a northern state after the ruling coalition declined to contest the vacant seat.

The opposition People's Alliance, led by former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, won the seat in the northern Penang state assembly with more than 6,000 votes.

Bus accident kills 15 people

JAKARTA - FIFTEEN Indonesians were killed on Sunday when an inter-city bus lost control due to a brake failure on Sumatra island, police said, adding that the death toll may rise.
