JAKARTA - INDONESIAN President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is a clear favourite to win a second term in office in a July election, helped by the resilient performance of Southeast Asia's largest economy during the global crisis.

The poll line-up was finalised after a deadline to register expired on Saturday and will pit the reform-minded President Yudhoyono against a political elite with its roots in the Suharto era.

 
21 Afghan migrants detained

JAKARTA - INDONESIAN police say they have detained 21 illegal migrants from Afghanistan who left their war-torn homeland in search of assistance and work.

Col Rohmad Nur Said, a local police chief in northwestern Riau province, says they were picked up Thursday after their bus had an accident. None of the migrants was injured.

Philippines slams Suu Kyi case

MANILA - THE Philippines on Sunday expressed outrage over what it called trumped-up charges Myanmar's military junta has filed against opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo called for the immediate and unconditional release of the Nobel Peace Prize winner and other members of the political opposition detained by the country's military leaders.

6 farmers killed by lightning

HANOI - LIGHTNING in Vietnam killed six farmers harvesting their rice paddy fields, police said on Sunday.

The lightning on Saturday also injured 10 others in three different communes in central Nghe An province, a policeman in Yen Thanh district told AFP.
