MANILA - AT LEAST 16 Filipinos have been arrested since January for trying to smuggle drugs into China, Hong Kong and Macau, prompting the Philippine government to renew a warning that traffickers can face the death penalty, an official said Sunday.

 
M'sia cuts worker permits

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA has slashed its work permit approvals for foreign workers by almost 70 per cent so far this year, faced with the twin threat of layoffs and recession, according to a report on Sunday.

In January and February, an average of 250 permits were approved daily compared to 800 last year, following a more stringent vetting process by the authorities, a Home Ministry official told the Star newspaper.

'Shocked' by smears

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA'S next first lady Rosmah Mansor has said she was 'shocked' by attacks from political opponents who have attempted to link her and her husband to a sensational murder.

But the wife of deputy premier Najib Razak, who is to be installed as prime minister later this month, dismissed suggestions the accusations could overshadow his premiership and said the experience had made them stronger.

Too much junk in kids' hands
