KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA on Tuesday cancelled work visas issued to 55,000 Bangladeshi workers after demands from unions, as the country faces layoffs and the threat of recession.

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said Bangladeshi workers who had visas approved last year, but who had not yet arrived in Malaysia, would not be allowed to take up employment here.

 
Crash pilot blames faulty flap

YOGYAKARTA (Indonesia) - THE pilot of a Garuda Indonesia jet that crashed in 2007, killing 21 people, blamed a faulty wing flap Tuesday for the plane's lethal air speed as it came in to land.

7,000 kg of exotic meat seized

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN authorities have seized the butchered remains of dozens of civet cats, long-tailed monkeys and wild boar destined to be sold to neighbouring countries, an official said on Tuesday.

The Department of Wildlife and National Parks said it seized a total of 7,000 kilos of exotic meat in a raid near the Thai border on Monday.

Anwar's trial set for July

KUALA LUMPUR - OPPOSITION leader Anwar Ibrahim will go on trial for sodomy in July, Malaysia's high court said on Tuesday, overruling the politician's fears of not getting a fair hearing.

High Court Judge Mohamad Zabidin Mohamad Diah scheduled hearings for July 1-24, nearly a year after Mr Anwar pleaded innocent in August 2008 to a charge of sodomising a 23-year-old male former aide.
