KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA'S opposition has hit out at corruption allegations against one of its leaders who is accused of misusing public funds to maintain his luxury car and to buy cattle for a Muslim feast.

 
19 political prisoners released

YANGON (Myanmar) - SEVERAL monks and three members of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's political party were among the more than 6,300 prisoners released by Myanmar's junta as part of a government amnesty, a party spokesman and a rights group said on Sunday.

Sumatran tiger kills 2 loggers

JAKARTA - A SUMATRAN tiger mauled two illegal loggers to death in western Indonesia, bringing to five the number of people killed by the critically endangered cats in less than a month, a conservationist said on Sunday.

The tiger attacked a 50-year-old man and his 18-year-old son early Saturday while they slept next to a pile of stolen wood in a protected forest on Sumatra island, about 600km west of the capital Jakarta, said Didy Wurdjanto of the state conservation agency.

Couple beheaded in Thai south

YALA - A MARRIED couple were shot dead by separatist rebels in Thailand's far south on Sunday, who then beheaded the husband and left his corpse in a rubber plantation, police said.

The Thai man and wife, both in their late 30s, were on their way to tap rubber in Yala province at dawn on Sunday when they were ambushed by the militants.
