BASCO (Philippines) - A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck north of the Philippines on Friday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no reports of casualties or damage.

The shallow undersea quake struck at 8.28pm (Singapore time) around 108 kilometres northwest of Basco, the capital of the Batan Islands, which lie in the Luzon Strait between the Philippines and Taiwan, the USGS said.

 
2 dead in Indon train collision

SURABAYA (Indonesia) - TWO people were killed and four seriously injured after a passenger train and a cargo train collided in Indonesia's East Java province, a police official at the scene said on Friday.

Indian murdered in M'sia jail

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA'S Attorney General on Friday classified the death of an ethnic Indian while in police custody as murder, after his family demanded an independent autopsy to investigate allegations of police brutality.

A. Kugen, 23, died on Tuesday, five days after he was detained for suspected car theft.

Intel to close Philippines plant

MANILA (Philippines) - INTEL Corp said on Friday 1,800 workers at its plant in the Philippines will lose their jobs when it closes this year as a part of global cost-cutting efforts amid waning personal computer demand.

Intel announced on Wednesday it would cut 6,000 jobs and close several factories in Asia and the US.
