BANGKOK - THAILAND'S new prime minister held talks with rights groups on Monday in a bid to stem damaging reports that the kingdom's navy set hundreds of migrants adrift at sea with scant food and water.

Indon cops torch Papua homes

TIMIKA (Indonesia) - INDONESIAN police torched dozens of houses and killed pigs belonging to villagers in restive Papua province as they searched for stolen weapons, a local tribal official said on Monday.

The wave of destruction on Sunday came after police shot dead a local man during a clash with an armed group outside the village two days earlier, according to the Papua Customary Council which represents tribal interests.

1st Khmer Rouge trial to start

PHNOM PENH - CAMBODIA'S UN-backed genocide tribunal on Monday officially set February 17 as the start date for the long-awaited first trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders accused of atrocities in the 1970s.
