KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN police said on Wednesday they had arrested 13 people for running an international narcotics syndicate that smuggled heroin from Pakistan.

Mr Othman Harun, deputy director of the federal narcotics department, said those detained on Monday included two women, from Singapore and the Philippines, as well as seven African men, one Pakistani and three Malaysians.

 
Lawmakers jailed for corruption

JAKARTA- INDONESIA'S feared anti-corruption court handed jail sentences on Wednesday to sitting and former lawmakers convicted of corruption.

Asean summit venue moved

BANGKOK - THAI Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Wednesday that the venue for a key regional summit next month had now been moved from Bangkok to a seaside town, partly due to possible anti-government protests.

In the latest in a series of changes since the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) meeting was postponed from December, Abhisit said the February 27 to March 1 summit would now be in the resort of Hua Hin.

200 foreigners stranded

BANDA ACEH (Indonesia) - A WOODEN boat carrying around 200 foreign nationals was found stranded on an island off the northern tip of Indonesia's Sumatra island on Wednesday, officials said.
