KUALA LUMPUR - A 59-YEAR-OLD prince was on Monday picked as the new ruler of a southern Malaysian state, following the death of a former king of the country.

Tuanku Jaafar Tuanku Abdul Rahman, who died on Saturday after complaining of dizziness and chest pains, will be succeeded as ruler of Negri Sembilan state by his nephew, Tunku Mukhriz Tunku Munawir, the official Bernama news agency said.

MANILA - A WELL-CONNECTED Philippines politician is under investigation for an incident in which he, his brother and their armed bodyguards allegedly beat up two golfers, officials said on Monday.

Nasser Pangandaman Junior, a town mayor and the son of cabinet member Nasser Pangandaman, may also face a police probe for the incident in which the men allegedly beat up a father and son on a golf course.

Recruitment for Gaza

JAKARTA - A MILITANT Muslim group in Indonesia said on Monday it plans to recruit as many as 1,000 volunteers to fight in the Gaza Strip in response to Israeli air strikes that have killed more than 300 Palestinians.
