BANGKOK - THAI Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva warned on Tuesday that the recent spread of counterfeit banknotes in the country had eroded consumer confidence and must be solved immediately.

Police have said there is an increase in fake currency in circulation, especially the 1,000 baht (S$42) denomination, while television shows have been showing how to spot a bogus note.

 
3 to join rebel peace talks

MANILA (Philippines) - THE Philippine government has appointed three members to a new panel formed to revive peace talks with the country's largest Muslim rebel group after negotiations collapsed amid fighting four months ago, officials announced on Tuesday.

Ebola-Reston confirmed in pigs

ROME - THE Ebola-Reston virus has been detected in pigs for the first time in the world, in the Philippines, the UN food agency said on Tuesday.

Examinations of samples taken from sick pigs earlier this year confirmed that they were infected with the Ebola-Reston virus, the Food and Agriculture Organisation said in a statement.

Rare rhinos found in Java

JAKARTA - FOUR calves of the world's rarest species of rhino have been found in remote jungle on Indonesia's Java island, giving hope to efforts to save them from extinction, an official said on Tuesday.

'Four Javan rhinos of six to seven months age were seen by scientists on the beach near the jungle during a recent field survey,' Agus Primabudi, the head of the Ujung Kulon National Park in West Java, told AFP.
