BANGKOK - THAILAND'S parliament could vote next week for a new prime minister, a parliamentary official said on Tuesday, as both the main party in the outgoing government and the main opposition party claimed they had enough votes to win.

'After the king has approved the request to open a special parliamentary session, the House Speaker is likely to set a date next week for the vote for prime minister,' Pitoon Poomhiran, secretary-general of the lower house, told reporters.

 
Mob burns Moluccas church

JAKARTA - AN ANGRY mob burned a church and several houses in the central region of Indonesia's Moluccas islands, injuring two people, after a local Christian teacher offended Islam, police said on Tuesday.

The Moluccas, in the eastern part of predominantly Muslim Indonesia, has a substantial Christian population.

Residents to sue govt

KUALA LUMPUR - RESIDENTS of a Malaysian housing estate hit by a weekend landslide that killed four people said on Tuesday they were considering suing the government for compensation.

The disaster was the latest in a series of slippages in Kuala Lumpur's up-market northeastern suburbs, triggering a frenzy of finger-pointing over who is to blame for the continuing loss of life and property.

Criticised for anti-porn law

JAKARTA - INDONESIAN President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was strongly criticised on Tuesday after signing a tough anti-pornography law which opponents have said threatens national unity.

The law, backed by Islamic parties in the capital Jakarta, criminalises all works and 'bodily movements' deemed obscene and capable of violating public morality, and offers heavy penalties.
