Opposition can form govt

BANGKOK - THAILAND'S main opposition party said on Saturday it could form a government with members of the ruling coalition that collapsed this week, freezing out allies of ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The surprise development comes just days after a court stripped Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat of his position and disbanded the pro-Thaksin People Power Party in a vote fraud case, following months of anti-government protests.

Attempt to select new PM

BANGKOK (Thailand) - THAILAND'S fractured political parties met on Saturday to choose a new prime minister, while the revered king's illness and the abrupt return of exiled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's powerful ex-wife threatened to deepen the country's political crisis.

The selection of a new leader with close ties to Thaksin could spark another round of mass protests that paralysed the government for six months and climaxed with the weeklong seizure of Bangkok's two airports.

Strong quake strikes E.Timor

DILI - A STRONG 6.2-magnitude quake struck East Timor on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
