BANGKOK - THAILAND'S army spokesman on Thursday denied that the military was planning to stage a coup, as rumours circulated that they would step in to end political turmoil in the kingdom.

'The military have moved tanks for strategic purposes but I can confirm that there is no coup and the military has not been ordered to be on stand-by,' Colonel Sunsern Kaewkumnerd told AFP.

 
Emergency at airports

BANGKOK - THAI Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat confirmed on Thursday that the government has imposed a state of emergency at Bangkok's two main airports after they were occupied by protesters.

'It is wrong for protesters to take the entire Thai nation hostage,' Mr Somchai said in a televised address to the nation.

US$7m loss a day

BANGKOK - THAILAND is losing about US$7 million (S$10.6 million) a day in tourist revenue as anti-government protests force the ongoing closure of the main international airport, an industry body said on Thursday.

Block BKK, prevent coup

BANGKOK - THAILAND'S ruling party on Thursday called on its supporters to clog Bangkok's streets to prevent a possible coup attempt after Prime MinisterSomchai Wongsawat rejected army demands that he resign, Bloomberg news reported.

'People who have cars and cabbies should drive and block any tanks that may come out if there is a coup,' Mr Suthin Klangsaeng, a deputy spokesman of the People Power Party, said in comments broadcast on Thai PBS channel. 'Anyone opposing a coup should also take to the streets.'
