KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA plans to lift a ban preventing foreign retirees living in the country from seeking employment, to allow local and international companies to tap a potentially large pool of highly educated professionals.

 
Non-muslims welcome

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA'S main Islamic opposition party hopes to open its membership to non-Muslims, an official said on Monday, in a bold move aimed at attracting supporters among ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities.

Many political parties represent particular ethnic groups in the racially diverse country. The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, or PAS, has long been the ruling United Malays National Organisation's chief rival for the support of the ethnic Malay Muslim majority.

Sermon on turtle protection

KUALA LUMPUR - ISLAMIC preachers in eastern Malaysia will deliver an unusual ecological sermon urging Muslims to protect migratory turtles that are threatened with extinction, conservationists said on Monday.

Why did they divorce?

SINCE news of former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra's divorce from his wife broke on Saturday, speculation has been rife over why he did it.

Thaksin's spokesman Pongthep Thepkanchana confirmed that the divorce took place in a Thai Consulate in Hong Kong last week, but said he did not know why.
