THAILAND - MAJOR Chamlong Srimuang, a leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy on Tuesday challenged Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat to file defamation suits against those whom he accused of editing the video clip to cause him damage.

Mr Somchai had admitted on Saturday that he was the man in the video clip circulating on the internet and posted in the manager website but the video was edited with intention to defame him.

 
Myanmar jails journalist

YANGON - A COURT in military-ruled Myanmar has sentenced a journalist to two years in prison for her coverage of a protest over the lack of government relief for victims of a devastating cyclone, colleagues said on Saturday.

Ein Khaing Oo, who had been detained for five months, was sentenced on Friday after being convicted in a closed-door trial on charges of 'disturbing tranquility,' according to colleagues who asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation.

Extremist kidnapper slain

ZAMBOANGA (Philippines) - SOLDIERS in the Philippines have killed an Islamic militant suspected of involvement in the 2001 kidnapping of three Americans, a military official said on Saturday.

Faidar Hadjadi, a member of the Al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group, was shot dead after he was caught at a military checkpoint in the southern island of Jolo late on Friday, said local marine commander Colonel Eugenio Clemen.

Vietnam halts election project

HANOI - COMMUNIST Vietnam's legislature on Saturday put the brakes on a trial plan to allow direct local elections next year, in a last-minute change before closing its autumn session.
