BRUSSELS (Belgium) - MULTIPARTY elections scheduled for 2010 in Myanmar will be seen as illegitimate unless the ruling military junta frees all political prisoners - particularly Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, the European Union said Monday.

The remarks by EU foreign ministers came after opposition groups said Myanmar's military rulers have stepped up suppression of its political opponents and jailed a number of members of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy.

 
Man held in heroin sting

BANGKOK - THAI police charged a Taiwanese man and a local with trafficking after finding 100 kilograms of heroin in the country's biggest drugs bust in five years, police said Monday.

A 42-year-old from Taiwan and a 29-year-old Thai man were arrested on Sunday at two houses on the southern tourist isle of Phuket in a joint bust by Thai police and anti-drugs agents from the United States.

Bali executions questioned

JAKARTA - INDONESIA'S handling of the executions of three militants for the 2002 Bali bombings caused unnecessary suffering for victims of the blasts and helped fan domestic passions, Indonesian media said on Monday.

The three men from the militant Islamist group Jemaah Islamiah - Imam Samudra, Mukhlas, and Amrozi - were executed by firing squad on Sunday for the 2002 nightclub attacks that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians and 38 Indonesians.

Soldier killed in Thai south

NARATHIWAT (Thailand) - ONE soldier was killed and seven injured on Monday in two bombings in southern Thailand, the latest in a string of blasts in the insurgency-hit region, local police said.

The first roadside bomb hit a pick-up truck carrying eight solders in troubled Narathiwat province, causing minor damage to the vehicle, police said.
