NEW YORK - WALL Street shares opened a new month and quarter on an upbeat note on Wednesday, as an encouraging report on the US manufacturing sector helped offset weak news on the labour market.

 
Oil falls on US gas inventory

NEW YORK - OIL prices fell on Wednesday after government data showed an increase in US gasoline inventories ahead of the July 4 Independence Day holiday, traditionally the peak of the summer driving season.

GM sales fall 34% in June

CHICAGO - GENERAL Motors posted a 34 per cent drop in June sales on Wednesday but said it had managed to increase its retail sales for the fourth consecutive month despite seeking bankruptcy protection.

'Slippage' towards protectionism

GENEVA - THE World Trade Organisation said on Wednesday that there has been 'further slippage' towards trade restricting or distorting policies implemented by governments since March amid the economic crisis.
