Buffett lunch: US$456,789

NEW YORK - A BIDDER has offered to pay US$456,789 (S$685,184) for a steak lunch with billionaire investor Warren Buffett, in a charity auction expected to be completed Friday night on eBay website.

The top bid as of noon EDT (12 am Singapore time) in the 10th annual fundraiser remains well short of last year's record US$2.11 million paid by Hong Kong-based investor Zhao Danyang. The starting price was US$25,000, and the auction ends at 10 pm EDT (10 am Singapore time) on Friday.

US stocks drift lower

NEW YORK - WALL Street shares fell on Friday a day after a rally as investors locked in profits and turned cautious ahead of the weekend.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 45.65 points (0.54 per cent) to 8,426.75 in opening trades after posting on Thursday its first triple-digit gain since June 1.

Consumer spending up

WASHINGTON - HOUSEHOLDS pushed their savings rate to the highest level in more than 15 years in May as a big boost in incomes from the government's stimulus programme was devoted more to bolstering nest eggs than increased spending.

The Commerce Department said on Friday that consumer spending rose 0.3 per cent in May, in line with expectations. But incomes jumped 1.4 per cent, the biggest gain in a year and easily outpacing the 0.3 per cent increase that economists expected.
