NEW YORK - WALL Street stocks finished higher on Friday as further signs of recovery from the prolonged global economic slump helped the market keep upward momentum.

 
GM to build small cars in US

DETROIT - GENERAL Motors said on Friday that it plans to reopen a shuttered US factory to build compact cars that will likely be the smallest vehicles GM has ever produced here.

Wall Street opens higher

NEW YORK - WALL Street opened higher on Friday after the government said the US economy contracted less than initially estimated.

GDP shows smaller drop

WASHINGTON - THE US economy contracted 5.7 per cent in the first quarter, less than initially estimated, official data showed on Friday, due in part to improved readings on imports and durable goods orders.

The Commerce Department revised its initial estimate of a 6.1 per cent annualised decline for the January-March period, following a brutal 6.3 per cent contraction in the fourth quarter.
