NEW YORK - WALL Street stocks rose strongly Thursday lifted by a late rally as investors digested a mixed batch of US economic data and details of a bankruptcy plan for General Motors.

 
US to host G20 meeting

WASHINGTON - PRESIDENT Barack Obama will host the next Group of 20 economic summit Sept 24-25 in Pittsburgh.

The White House announced the meeting on Thursday.

Opec 'stays the course'

VIENNA - OPEC ministers on Thursday held output steady and instead bet on economic growth and recovering demand to drive an oil market that leapt to a six-month high above US$65 (S$94.45).

Home sales inches up

WASHINGTON - SALES of newly built US homes were flat in April, but are now 7 per cent above the rock-bottom lows of January, another indication the three-year housing downturn could be ending.

The Commerce Department said on Thursday that sales rose 0.3 per cent in April to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 352,000. But the increase came from a downwardly revised rate of 351,000 in March.
