LOS ANGELES - THE Walt Disney Company says it has cut 1,900 positions at its US theme parks due to the slumping economy.

Some 1,200 people were laid off and 700 open positions will be left unfilled.

 
Dow up, cracks 8,000 mark

NEW YORK - US STOCKS shrugged off a dismal March jobs report to end higher on Friday, capping their fourth weekly gain amid market expectations that the economic contraction is easing.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 39.51 points (0.50 per cent) to close above the the psychological 8,000 level at 8,017.59 in final trades.

Fedex begins layoffs

MEMPHIS - FEDEX has laid off 1,000 employees to meet job cuts the package delivery company announced were coming after third-quarter earnings dropped 75 per cent.

FedEx said on Friday that half of the laid off workers were employed in Memphis, where the corporation and its largest operating unit, FedEx Express, are headquartered.

US service sector shrinks again

NEW YORK - A PRIVATE trade group's measure of the strength of the US services sector shrank for the sixth straight month in March and at a faster pace than expected.
