WASHINGTON - US PRESIDENT-ELECT Barack Obama and his Democratic allies scrambled on Sunday to craft a massive economic stimulus package he hopes to sign into law soon after taking office on Jan 20 - provided he can placate resistant Senate Republicans.

Mr Obama and Vice-President-elect Joe Biden will meet Democratic and Republican congressional leaders on Monday in hopes of winning swift passage for an emergency measure to stem a deepening US recession.

 
No 2nd bank bailout: Brown

LONDON - THE British government is talking to banks about stepping up loans to credit-starved companies but a second bailout of banks is not on the cards at present, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said on Sunday.

'I don't think that's the first thing that anybody would think about at the moment,' Mr Brown said in a BBC television interview, when asked if the government planned a second recapitalisation of the banks.
