NEW YORK - US STOCKS swung lower at the opening on Friday as a series of deadly attacks in India rattled Wall Street and prompted profit taking from this week's heavy gains.

 
Eurozone inflation at 2.1%

BRUSSELS - INFLATION in the 15 countries sharing the euro plunged in November to a 14-month low of 2.1 per cent as oil prices dropped, according to an estimate by the Eurostat EU data agency on Friday.

Malaysia to escape recession

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA is likely to escape a recession next year and post a modest growth despite the global financial crisis due to strong consumer demand and public spending, the central bank said Friday.

Cathay to cut costs

HONG KONG - CATHAY Pacific Airways said on Friday it will park two freighters, offer unpaid leave to employees and may delay construction on a cargo terminal to cut costs amid the global economic downturn.

The new measures came three weeks after Hong Kong's flagship airline and Asia's No 3 carrier issued a profit warning due to slumping revenue and losses from hedging jet fuel costs.
